Non-Alcoholic Bevies Worthy of Drinking

I’ll admit, I love my wine, but realize how quickly it can turn into a nightly occurrence.  There are many healthy reasons for reducing your intake of alcohol- it can support weight loss, reduce inflammation and support optimization of both cholesterol and blood sugar levels.   Indirectly, intake of alcohol can also influence our ability to engage in other healthy behaviors.  Have you ever skipped a workout because you felt too sluggish after a night of drinking?  Have you noticed that your inhibitions are lower and you tend to make poor food choices? By no means am I suggesting you go alcohol free- I always support realistic, sustainable goals- but I do think it’s worth taking a step back and considering a reduction in intake.

I have been so impressed with the growing number of non-alcoholic options available on both restaurant menus and in stores.  Whether it be for health reasons, weight loss or to make transportation easier, there is a growing demand for tasty options that are more exciting than water.

Kombucha

Ok- this beverage can look a little scary to some.  In fact, I didn’t give it a try until the past couple years out of fear that it would taste awful.  I can confidently say that kombucha is my favorite non-alcoholic beverage out there.  It has that same fermented taste that comes with many typically alcoholic options.  Kombucha is a fermented tea and is served chilled.  While the jury is still out on it’s benefits for digestive health (it contains probiotic bacteria), it is a fantastic low sugar sub for a boozy beverage.  Please, if you haven’t already, give it a go.  Do take care in checking the sugar content on the label, as it can be highly variable among brands.  My favorite brand, hands down, is GT’s, and lucky for you it’s available pretty much anywhere in the US and Canada.  I adore the Gingerade, Gingerberry and Watermelon Wonder.

Shrubs

If you want to take your sparkling water to the next level, shrubs are a great option to have on hand.  Essentially, shrubs are a slightly sweetened drinking vinegar originally designed as a cocktail ingredient; however, they work equally as well at elevating water.  I’ve found some of the best options at Farmer’s Markets (adore The Shrubbery which ships across the US), but Calvit’s Sampler Pack is a readily available tasty option on Amazon.

Non-Alcoholic Craft Beers

While I have dabbled in non-alcoholic wines (don’t buy unless you like grape juice), I can wholeheartedly say that non-alcoholic beers are where it’s at.  In fact, I recently brought some to a party and noticed someone drinking one without realizing it was non-alcoholic.  Since I’m traditionally of the attitude “less hops is better,” my current favorite is Wellbeing’s Heavenly Body Golden Wheat; however, I dare you to check out your local Total Wine’s non-alcoholic beer section.  You wouldn’t believe the selection of craft IPA’s, stouts and ambers alike.

Wine Spritzers

Technically this beverage does contain some alcohol, but it’s significantly reduced.  I’ve been loving 1-2 oz of white or rosé cut with an accompanying flavor of La Croix.  Throw in some fresh fruit and you’ve got yourself a refreshing beverage perfect for patio weather.
